Jonathan Mattson

2015 Young Artist Competition Winner

Jonathan Mattson, 18, began studying the piano when he was eight years old, and started to develop an affinity for it three years later when he began studying classical repertoire. Jonathan loves playing the piano, because through it he can, "express himself and things far beyond himself in the profound style of classical music, communicating with the audience, imparting joy, beauty, satisfaction, and insight." He says that as a pianist, "I must take on the role of poet, storyteller, athlete, and vessel.”

Jonathan currently studies piano with Dr. Paul Wirth through The Wirth Center for the Performing Arts. Some of his many accomplishments include: Second Prize in the Schubert Club Scholarship Competition, First Prize in the Rochester Music Guild Scholarship Competition, First Prize in the Bunny Just Piano Competition, Second Prize in the Thursday Musical Competition, First Prize in the Clements Scholarship Competition, and being selected as one of nine finalists in The David D. Dubois International Piano Competition. Jonathan has performed with orchestras including The Rochester Symphony Orchestra, and Southeast Minnesota Youth Orchestra. He has participated in the Young Artist World Piano Festival for the past three years, and has been a frequent participant in The Young Musicians of Southeast Minnesota Recital Series, in addition to giving solo concerts at The Charter’s House’s Edwards Hall in Rochester Minnesota. Jonathan has also been featured in Minnesota Public Radio’s Minnesota Varsity, and is an active member of The Penrose Piano Trio. In his spare time Jonathan enjoys reading, writing, good food, and downhill skiing.
